Kigali (Stephen)

I arrived in Kigali in 2003, nine years after the genocide, and was immediately struck by the beauty and friendliness of the place. The city is set on a number of hills, giving amazing views of lush green trees and homes from almost any location. I spent two weeks orienting in the city before moving to work in a village school, learning about the efficient but crowded public minibuses, sampling the nightlife, and learning the local language. Kigali of 2003 bore no resemblance to the horror days of 1994, and today is different again, with shiny new skyscrapers dominating the skyline.
